Lay It Down Solo - Warren DeMartini Style

March 17th, 2007

In this video, Juan Carlos Alvarez plays the solo from Lay it Down. The song was originally performed by Ratt with Warren DeMartini on lead guitar. In my opinion, DeMartini is one of the most underrated guitar players from 80s metal.

About Warren DeMartini:

His blistering legato heavy guitar solos and uniquely painted Charvel guitars made him stand out in an era of VanHalen and Malmsteen clones. DeMartini’s ambient lead guitar sound and playing style was influenced by early Van Halen albums. In Ratt, his technical style mixed together well with guitarist Robbin Crosby’s more bluesy style of playing. Warren has referred to many renowned guitarists as his musical influences such as; Joe Perry, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, Uli Roth, Joe Walsh, and Pete Townshend.

Lay It Down

The song is from the band’s second full length album Invasion of Your Privacy. It was released July 1985. The single, Lay It Down, reached #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in the summer of 1985. It helped sustain Ratt’s achievements in the world of rock music, which would not stop until the dawn of the following decade. The song was co-written by Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy, bassist Juan Croucier, and guitarists Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini.
